Dean looked out the window, out toward the orange grove with Kai. They could just see the tops of the orange trees begin to roll like a slowly approaching wave. At the foot of the grove, just below the window, everyone was smiling and relaxing, completely unaware of what was heading toward them.

“That’s gotta be a shitload of them,” Dean said as he bit his lower lip and thought what to do. In reality, there was only one real option; they had to run. He just hoped they could do it quickly enough. “You have one minute before we’re out of here!” he said before turning and going for the door.

Quaid looked down at the match in his hand and then to his parents. He began to wonder if he was capable of doing such a thing in a minute, especially given the added stress of knowing that if he didn’t, he’d be eaten alive. From beside him, Jadon said in a reassuring voice, “I’ll wait here with you.” Quaid nodded his head thanking him.

Dean flew down the stairs with Kai following behind him. When Kai reached the bottom, he nearly collided with Irene as she was coming out of the bathroom.

“What’s wrong?” Irene asked with a fearful suspicion.

“Ghouls. Get to the truck!” Kai yelled, as he moved to get by her.

“Wait, where’s Cece?”

Kai stopped at the front door and scanned the street, looking for her. Not wanting to waste time standing there, Kai answered, “We’ll find her.”

Hector was sitting on a porch step, eating an orange and having a warm Budweiser with a generous amount of hot sauce that he poured into it for some added flavor. Dean jumped off the porch, skipping the stairs, stopped and turned to Hector, ordering, “Get the truck started.” He then continued toward the survivors, repeatedly yelling for them to get into the truck.

Everyone immediately reacted in a panic by grabbing their things and climbing into the back of the garbage truck. A few remained at the opening, not so eager to let themselves get cornered if the truck didn’t get moving in time. It wasn’t until the engine roared to life at Hector’s hand that they finally backed away from the opening and into the interior of the truck’s dumpster.

A few feet from the back of the dumpster, Dean pulled out his gun and held it ready as he searched the grove for the first corpses to become visible.

“You see Cece?’ Kai asked as he ran up to Dean. Dean’s only reply was a shake of his head. With this answer, Kai immediately sprinted into the grove to search for her.

Deeper in the orange grove, Ava and Teresa stopped as they heard the yells to get into the truck erupt from the street. They had entered only a moment before to search for Cece and now began to worry for their own lives as well as hers.

“What’s happening?” Teresa asked with wide eyes, “Is the group getting attacked?”

“I don’t know,” Ava said, wondering the same thing as the teenager.
